Growing up in a small town outside Johannesburg, Goldblatt witnessed the harsh realities of South African life. His photographs explore this reality, intimately examining its complexities and contradictions. This image captures workers in the first fifteen minutes of their four-hour journey back to KwaNdebele, the 'homeland' to which many black South Africans were forcibly moved. They made this journey morning and evening, a total of eight hours travelling for a day's work.
