The Department of Art & Music, in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), is proud to present an exhibition curated from artworks created by intermediate-phase learners across the Gauteng Province. This exhibition marks a significant milestone, commemorating the tenth anniversary of our joint teacher training initiative—an Engaged Scholarship project initiated by the Department of Art & Music—in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education.
The project involves the annual selection of 60 educators by the GDE to participate in workshops held at the Unisa Sunnyside Campus and various schools throughout Gauteng. These dedicated educators receive comprehensive training in visual art and music techniques, methodologies, pedagogy, and theoretical knowledge through a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC). This initiative connects the expertise of our department's lecturers with the practical experience of teachers and subject advisors working in Gauteng schools.
This exhibition celebrates the creativity and artistic talents of learners from across Gauteng. It also showcases the significant achievements of educators who have benefited from our training initiative. Moreover, it highlights the spirit of collaboration between the University of South Africa and the local communities in Gauteng.
The exhibition features a diverse range of artworks, including two-dimensional pieces like drawings and paintings, as well as three-dimensional creations such as sculptures, ceramics, and crafts. These works are organized around themes such as portraiture, landscapes, nature, buildings, and other themes observed by the curators that align with the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) curriculum.
Through this exhibition, we aim to contribute to the advancement of the arts in Gauteng and the communities we serve. We aspire to inspire and empower future artists and arts educators, encouraging them to continually pursue excellence as they develop their skills."
