In partnership with the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP), the UNISA Art Gallery is proud to present an exhibition that celebrates the power of visual storytelling to raise awareness about one of the world’s most urgent issue: water.
Marking the 50th anniversary of IHP, this exhibition honours the ongoing work towards sustainable water management, citizen science, and international cooperation that has been at the heart of the programme since its founding in 1974.
The exhibition features the winning photo stories from a groundbreaking initiative designed to engage South African citizens, communities, and youth in conversations about the vital role water plays in shaping our societies. Through photography, these stories articulate the deep, intertwined relationships between water, culture, education, and natural sciences—showcasing moments of collaboration, innovation, and action. Each image is a testament to the creativity, resilience, and collective efforts of those working to ensure a water-secure future for all.
The idiom “A picture is worth a thousand words” holds significant resonance in this context. Photography, as an accessible medium, not only illuminates the profound complexities of water use and management but also makes tangible the stories of those who are on the front lines of water conservation and education. From community-based water projects to youth-driven campaigns, these images provide a window into the heart of South Africa’s water action agenda, transforming abstract concepts into visual realities that inspire action.
In addition to the powerful stories conveyed through these images, the exhibition forms part of a broader initiative to celebrate and amplify South Africa’s contribution to global water sustainability efforts. The exhibition will culminate in the launch of a photo story book, which will further elevate these stories, ensuring they reach global audiences and contribute to the ongoing dialogue on water management.
As we commemorate the 50-year legacy of the IHP, we invite visitors to reflect on how water, an essential resource for life can be both a challenge and a catalyst for positive change. This exhibition is not just about observing but participating in the global conversation about how we can secure a water-rich future, for ourselves and future generations.
